Classification of Fire-resistant material as per EN 13501-1
1. E Class – Integrity:
Integrity glass can withstand fire exposure to one side without transmission of the fire because of flames or hot gases. It acts as a physical barrier to stop the fire.
2. EW Class – Integrity and Low Radiation:
The ability of a material not to collapse to prevent the passage of flame to limit the heat transfer through the material.
3. EI Class – Integrity and Insulation:
The ability of a material to withstand fire exposure on one side without transmission of fire to the unexposed side by limiting heat transfer due to conduction, convection, or radiation (in addition to integrity). It maintains a mean temperature of 140°C and a maximum temperature of 180°C on the non-fire side of construction.
How does fire–resistant glass works?
As soon as the glass is exposed to fire, it breaks and the gel expands, which protects the outside glass against thermal shock and keeps it below its softening temperature till the end of the test (EW120).
